About Manycolored Lupine (Lupinus variicolor) 4 Nurseries Carry This Plant Lupinus variicolor, varied lupine, manycolored lupine, Lindley's varied lupine or varicolored lupine is a shrub in the lupine (lupin) genus Lupinus. Its range is restricted to the northern coastal scrub and coastal prairie in the U.S. state of California. It thrives in elevations between 0 and 1,640 feet L. variicolor is endemic to the U.S. state of California where it occurs mostly along the northern coast, though it has also been reported in Sutter County, California. It is one of the foodplants of the endangered mission blue butterfly.
