Quailbush (
Atriplex lentiformis
ssp. breweri) is a native shrub in the Chenopodiaceae (Goosefoot) family that grows primarily along the coast in southern California, with scattered inland locations. Some authorities do not recognize this coastal subspecies as distinct from the parent species or ssp. lentiformis. The difference is in the larger leaves and fruits of ssp. breweri. It tends to grow in wetlands at elevations from sea level to 5,000 feet, although it may also be found outside of wetlands. Though not a showy plant, it is very tolerant of harsh conditions including alkalinity, salinity, heat, cold and drought. It is an excellent wildlife plant, attracting numerous birds, small mammals and insects. Its size and appearance make it less popular for the average residential garden but well-suited for larger gardens or acreage where the creation of wildlife habitat is desired. Although drought tolerant, a source of underground water is preferred.
