Pacific Manzanita (
Arctostaphylos pacifica
) is a very rare native shrub that is known from only a single location in the San Bruno Mountains. It is state-listed as Endangered and is on CNPS list 1B.2. It has also been subject to some taxonomic uncertainty. It was previously considered a hybrid but is now considered a distinct species. Despite its rarity in the wild, it has been available in the horticultural trade for a number of years. It is a ground-cover manzanita that is attractive and garden tolerant. In its native location it enjoys a climate that is very moderate, with 20-40 inches of winter rainfall annually and mild, foggy summers. It is best used along the central coast.
